CITYTV INVESTIGATES THE STATE OF CANADA’S PUBLIC UNIONS IN ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY TOUGH CHOICES WITH GORD MARTINEAU: LABOUR PAINS, JAN. 8
– Labour Pains investigates whether Canada can afford to have public unions, and whether society can afford not to –
– Second installment of four one-hour documentaries co-produced and co-written by CityNews anchor Gord Martineau –
(TORONTO – December 22, 2011) As the nation recovers from economic crisis, suffering job cuts, wage freezes and privatization of public sector services, the debate looms – are public unions in Canada being threatened? With two sides to every story, CityNews anchor Gord Martineau explores whether Canada can afford public unions and if the economy can afford to do without them in Tough Choices with Gord Martineau: Labour Pains, premiering Sunday, Jan. 8 at 10pm ET/PT (8pm MT, 9pm CT) on Citytv.
The second installment of a four-part docu-series co-written and co-produced by Martineau, this comprehensive and thought-provoking documentary trails Martineau as he dives deep into the heart of the union debate, beginning with an in-depth examination of online discussions that have set the internet ablaze. The faces of those affected come to light, as Canadian firefighters laid-off due to budget constraints discuss the need for public unions, highlighting their belief that the safety of the public has now been compromised.
Then, journey south of the border to Stockton, California, a city now best known for being the core of the U.S. mortgage meltdown. In the wake of financial despair, taxpayers place the blame of their city’s bankruptcy upon local firefighters, believing their fiscal issues stem from hefty pension demands, causing a major strain on the budget. The taxpayers’ anger has forced fire hall closures and layoffs. Is this something that could happen north of the border? Find out, as Martineau searches to find both sides of this contentious issue.
